2023 – YEAR IN REVIEW

After another difficult year and the continued closure of Canterbury Rink for repairs, we again started the year with renewed optimism with skaters eager to take to the ice.   Other Clubs and rinks have been incredibly supportive of both skaters and coaches and in 2023, assisting with hosting of SFSC branded competitions.   Again, our Synchronized skating teams have had a difficult task in finding suitable ice time for training, but again, rinks continue to be very accommodating where possible.

SFSC’s focus for 2023 has been the continued support of its members, and helping The Ice Skating Club of NSW Co-Operative Ltd (ISCNSW) where possible.

Romy Grogan:  Romy, unable to compete in 2022, did us proud in the Women’s Senior Division at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid in January 2023.   Well done Romy.

Aussie Skate: Congratulations to all of our Aussie Skate level skaters for the mammoth effort put in during 2023.   SFSC fell to 5th place in the Perpetual Point Score in 2023, from 2nd place in 2022.  This reflected the fall in member numbers due to the continued rink closure.   Regardless of the fall in Aussie Skate SFSC member numbers, the standards were high and we are considerably proud of individual achievements.

Artistic: Always a fun time of the year where skaters can let their hair down and thoroughly enjoy doing something different.  SFSC had several skaters achieve in the Artistic events during the season.  Congratulations to them all.  Below are the place getters for these events.

Synchronized Skating:  SFSC congratulates all their Synchro teams for their hard work and commitment under trying circumstances.   With Canterbury rink still closed for repairs, teams have struggled to find suitable ice time at other rinks (a rare commodity at the best of times!).   Despite the rink closure, all teams performed well at States and went on to excel at the Australian Figure Skating Championships (AFSC) late in 2023.  As they did in 2022, in the lead up to AFSC 2023, teams were training at different rinks around NSW, which for some skaters was difficult, juggling work, study and skating at ridiculous times of the day and night and travelling as far as Erina and Hunter for Team Unity our Senior Team and Canberra for our Junior Team.   Heartfelt thanks to all NSW rinks involved for their assistance in helping us ‘get across the line’.

We were proud of Team Unity and Majestic Ice Junior who both placed 1st at AFSC 2023 and gained qualification to represent Australia at the Junior Worlds (Neuchatel in March 2024) and Senior World Synchronized Skating Championships (Zagreb – Early April 2024).

Team Unity were invited to skate at the Shanghai Trophy, placing 3rd overall.  Congratulations.

Majestic Ice Basic Novice team achieved a well-deserved 3rd Place at AFSC against strong competition.  Credit to our coaches, all our skaters, for the assistance of the rinks and support from SFSC, which has enabled our teams to succeed when all was against them.

After placing 1st in the Senior Synchronized Division of AFSC 2022, Team Unity qualified for the World Synchronised Skating Championships in Lake Placid, USA in March/April 2023, where they placed a creditable 18th.

After placing 1st in the Junior Division of AFSC 2022, Majestic Ice Junior travelled to Angers, France in March 2023 for the Junior World Championships and placed 21st overall

Awards: SFSC are proud to note that Hektor Giotopolous Moore was the winner of the Magpie Sports Award in May 2023 – Congratulation

Competitions:  Congratulations go to all SFSC skaters for their efforts this past year, regardless of competition placements.   With fragmented training in 2023 and the closure of COIR, it has been somewhat difficult for all.

Hollins Trophy & Hollins Trophy International:  Due to our rink being closed, Hollins Trophy & Hollins Trophy International was held at Erina Ice Arena.

We saw record number of skaters enrolling for both competitions. After withdrawals 204 competitors skated over the long weekend – 60 international skaters 144 local skaters. International skaters represented Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, Indonesia and Singapore. Local skaters represented ACT, SA, WA, QLD, VIC and NSW.  Such an amazing start to hosting Hollins Trophy International

SFSC Club Championships and Trophy NightThis event was held at Ice Zoo Ice Rink with 67 competitors.   Congratulations to all.
